Yasunori Mitsuda is a Japanese video game composer and musician. His compositions are featured on over over 35 video games, including titles such as Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Chrono Cross and Xenosaga Episode 1: Der Wille zur Macht. In addition to scoring videogame projects, over the last decade, he has pursued several solo album projects as well. He has also been involved in collaborative and behind-the-scenes work, such as the Shadow Hearts series in the mid-2000s, and more recently, heading up a composing team for the critically-acclaimed Xenoblade Chronicles, which will be released in North America this April.
Mitsudas approach when developing original music for games begins with taking the time to learn about a video games scenario, characters setting and background art. By doing this, he is able to customize music for every game, and not merely fit his compositions into relevant spots.
Each region of Lime Odyssey is filled with compositions created to reflect its mystical background and vibrant colors. Lime Odysseys Blue Coral has a predominate piano melody that sets the homely pace for this sea port town as the accompanying strings carry a melody that resonates with the surrounding forests. In West Tumbara, players will hear musical notes that start small and build up to the grandiose march that fits perfectly with the progression of the Turga as they press forward on their journey toward Lime. Mitsuda uses light strings, woodwinds, and brass to reflect the vastness of the plains, while leading into the introduction of drums that instill a sense of progression. The theme for the Muris hub of Pripet is very light and airy while still maintaining an earthly tone as it complements the lush colorful forest. Lively strings and piano coupled with woodwinds and bells inject the area with life and magic.
The soundtrack of Lime Odyssey displays Mitsudas knack for capturing a regions natural and cultural ambience. By immersing himself into the game, he has been able to perfectly complement the aesthetics of each area in the game while establishing a unique mood and tone to correlate with each region. Mitsudas choice of instruments for the music of Lime Odyssey will invoke a sense of nostalgia in anyone who is familiar with his work.
